What Does a $10K Grant Have to do HIV-AIDS and a Deck of Playing Cards?

Years ago, I was a boardmember at a Los Angeles area  nonprofit that was focused on maternal and child health services for low-income women.  With HIV/ADS running rampant among the target population, it was important to include HIV/AIDS education into the programming.

I had an idea for a creative HIV-AIDS education prevention project that was out of the ordinary.  Instead of creating another typical brochure with information that would either be ignored, or tossed in the trash. I thought a deck of customized playing cards would be a unique way to present information about HIV/AIDS.

The Grantbuilder 5-Step, 10 Building Blocks process was used to secure a $10,000 grant from the State of California, Office of AIDS, for a nonprofit organization that was involved in HIV-AIDS outreach.

The nonprofit printed 2,500 decks, which their staff and volunteers distributed at various events in the Los Angeles area.  THIS IS THE GRANT WRITING SYSTEM COVERED DURING EACH FREE WORKSHOP!

This is an example how "out-of-the-box" thinking resulting in a "health" grant being used to create a deck of playing cards.  As you can see, the cards serve an educational function as well as providing contact info for more information about HIV-AIDS.
